J. Bennett Fitts, a young California artist, owe something to the Bechers (also discussed). Like them, Mr. Fitts has inventoried an unlovely feature of the modern environment in lucidly objectifying images. In contrast to the Bechers' quasiscientific approach Fitts's pictures have a more elegant and metaphorical feeling. Swimming pools are signs of spiritual optimism and economic prosperity, so the image of a pool dried up and cracked or half full of dirty water becomes a symbol of disappointed hopes and dreams.
Fitt's images are very ironic and in some way funny. It's almost like he judges our modern way of living just by showing us where modern society failed. Very inspiring pictures, check http://www.jbennettfitts.com/index.php
